"The Various Methods Of Escape" by Amber Spooner.
About the play:
Grace is 19 years old when she finally escapes 12 years in captivity. Once she returns to her family she is determined to establish a normal life for herself, but her captor, Gregory won’t leave her alone.
The play examines not only how Grace’s captivity affected her but also how it impacted each member of her family. Her father is racked with guilt and shame, her mother loses her identity in the fight to find her and her sister, Hope just wants permission to be her own person.
"The Various Methods of Escape" was written as part of ‘The Hive’ program run by The Street Theatre in Canberra. It was inspired by Natascha Kampusch's thoughts on her captor as well as the victimisation she experienced in her post captive years.

Gregory is Grace’s captor. He is well spoken, intelligent, charming and at first appears to be non-threating. However, he is someone who is desperate for power and to maintain any sense of control over Grace as she moves further and further away from him. Throughout the course of the play Grace is the only one that acknowledges him but all the other characters feel and are affected by his presence. He is seen by the audience as Grace’s perception of him. Must have strong stage presence!
